High fat Diet may speed up Age Related Macular Degeneration Age related macular degeneration ( AMD ), a common, progressive eye disease in older people, is the leading cause of irreversible visual impairment and blindness for people over the age of 50 in the Western world, affecting approximately 25-30 million people. "Specifically, higher intake of vegetable fat, and to a lesser extent animal fat, increased rates of progression. Saturated, monounsaturated, polyunsaturated, and transunsaturated fats were also associated with progression." According to Dr. Johanna M. Seddon , of the Massachusetts eye and Ear Infirmary in Boston . Research has also linked low levels of lutein and zeaxanthin - carotenoids found in dark green, leafy vegetables such as spinach and kale - to risk of age-related macular degeneration. Lutein supplements and other anti-oxidants such as zinc are becoming increasingly popular for eye health as consumers become more aware of dietary prevention of the disease. The Green Tea Treatment New research provides more evidence to back green tea's anti-cancer effects in humans. The tea's active agent Epigallocatecin-3-gallate, already thought to lower cholesterol, prevent heart disease, fight bacteria and dental cavities, and possibly aid weight loss, may also slow tumor growth in breast and liver cancers, suggests research. "Laboratory studies have suggested that green tea consumption may produce many health benefits, including the prevention of cancer, but the beneficial effects in humans are not clearly known," said Dr. CS Yang from Rutgers University, N.J. "Research is now showing how this novel chemopreventive agent might work at the molecular level and in the human population," Dr. Yang added.
