Home Based Businesses:
Who is Starting Home Them?
Believe it or not, up until 200 years ago, most people ran their own businesses. They owned farms, raised cattle, or operated small shops. Just think of an old western - the general store owner, the rancher, the blacksmith - everybody ran their own business. Then, with the industrial revolution, people began to work for other people - in factories, offices, and large corporations. But today, we're seeing a return to people starting their own home-based business.
Who's starting all these businesses? Everyone. Almost 10 million home-based businesses are owned and operated by women. And minorities are starting businesses at home at twice the rate of white males. The lure of running a home-based business is calling to people from all walks of life. And if current trends continue, the majority of Americans will work at home in the next century.
Why? 78% of people who own their own home businesses say they like the freedom and control over their destiny. 46% said making large amounts of money was a primary motivation. And 90% said that, if given the chance, they'd do it all over again. In fact, in a study conducted for the Small Business Administration, it was found that for thefirst time, home-based businesses are as profitable as businesses run outside the home.
Today, over 27 million home based businesses are operating in America. While many of these are small, a survey found that 20% of home-based businesses gross between $100,000 and $500,000.
